Step-by-step method
- Find plan area from length x width.
- Convert compacted thickness from millimetres to metres and calculate net volume.
- Apply the waste allowance to volume, then multiply by entered compacted density.

Calculation / processing
Area = 30 x 5 = 150 m².Net volume = 150 x 0.05 = 7.5 m³.Order volume = 7.5 x 1.05 = 7.875 m³; mass = 7.875 x 2.4 = 18.9 t.
The result is a planning quantity based on the entered dimensions, coverage/density values and allowance. Procurement should use current product data and site measurements.
Assumptions
- Geometry is represented by the simple dimensions entered in the tool.
- Coverage, density, stock size and waste/allowance inputs are project-specific values supplied by the user.
Limitations
- Irregular geometry, installation details, breakage, joints, laps, openings or supplier pack rules can change the actual order quantity.
- This is a quantity estimate, not structural/design certification or a substitute for drawings, specifications and supplier data.
Common questions
Why does ToolLott round some quantities up?
Items sold as whole boards, sheets, packs, boxes or panels cannot normally be ordered as fractions, so the tool rounds those purchase quantities upward.
Should I always use the default waste allowance?
No. Use an allowance appropriate to the material, layout, cutting pattern, site conditions and supplier guidance.
Can I use the result as a purchase order quantity?
Use it as a planning check, then confirm dimensions, product coverage/density and supplier pack sizes before ordering.
