Digital data rate conversion method

Digital speed is normalised to bit/s. Decimal network prefixes use powers of 1000, and byte-per-second units include the 8 bits per byte relationship before the value is converted to the target.

Normalise to base unit
bit/s = input x source bit-rate factor

result = bit/s / target bit-rate factor

A nominal 100 Mbit/s data rate equals 12.5 MB/s before protocol overhead or real-world transfer limits.

Assumptions

  • Decimal k/M/G/T prefixes use powers of 1000 in this tool.
  • One byte is treated as eight bits.

Limitations

  • Actual download speed is usually lower because of protocol overhead, latency, server limits and storage performance.
  • This does not convert between decimal and binary storage quantities such as GiB.

Common questions

Why does the Digital Speed Converter use a base unit internally?

Normalising the source value to one reference unit makes every supported source-to-target combination use one consistent calculation path.

Does conversion change the physical quantity?

No. It expresses the same quantity in a different unit.

Why can the displayed value contain many decimals?

Some unit ratios are not terminating decimals. ToolLott calculates with browser numeric precision and rounds only for display.
