Length Converter

Convert common metric, imperial and nautical length units.

Use the Length Converter

Convert common metric, imperial and nautical length units.

Calculations happen locally in your browser. ToolLott does not send these inputs to a server for this tool.

How to use it

Enter a value, choose the source and target units, then calculate. Results are rounded for display while calculations use full browser numeric precision.

Methodology & calculation transparency

How the Length Converter works

The Length Converter expresses the same length in another supported unit using the exact conversion relationships implemented by ToolLott.

How ToolLott got this answer

Calculation breakdown

ToolLott will explain the current inputs and displayed result here.

Length conversion method

ToolLott stores each supported length unit as an exact or defined number of metres. It multiplies the source value by the source-to-metre factor, then divides by the metre factor for the target unit.

Normalise to base unit
metres = input x source factor

ToolLott uses metre as the reference path for this conversion family.

Convert to target unit
result = metres / target factor

The target-unit factor converts the normalised quantity into the requested display unit.

Step-by-step method

  1. Read the entered length and selected source/target units.
  2. Convert the source value to the reference metre using the stored factor or formula.
  3. Convert the normalised value into the requested target unit.
  4. Format the result for display while keeping the calculation path reproducible.

Worked example

Sam, a operations coordinator, is checking a site note written as 1 km against a drawing dimensioned in metres before copying the figure into a schedule.

Example inputs

  • value = 1
  • from = km
  • to = m

Calculation / processing

  1. 1 mile x 1609.344 m/mile = 1609.344 m.
  2. 1609.344 m / 1000 = 1.609344 km.
1 km = 1,000 m.

A mile and 1.609344 kilometres represent the same distance in different unit systems.

Assumptions

  • Defined factors such as 1 inch = 0.0254 m and 1 nautical mile = 1852 m are used.
  • The conversion is linear and does not include map projection or geodesic effects.

Limitations

  • This converts scalar length only, not geographic coordinate distance.
  • Display rounding may omit additional decimal digits from the internal result.

Common questions

Why does the Length Converter use a base unit internally?

Normalising the source value to one reference unit makes every supported source-to-target combination use one consistent calculation path.

Does conversion change the physical quantity?

No. It expresses the same quantity in a different unit.

Why can the displayed value contain many decimals?

Some unit ratios are not terminating decimals. ToolLott calculates with browser numeric precision and rounds only for display.

Worked example

A realistic way Sam could use this tool

Sam is a operations coordinator.

1Real-world situation

Sam is checking a site note written as 1 km against a drawing dimensioned in metres before copying the figure into a schedule.

2Example data / workflow

They use the worked values shown in the tool: Value: 1; From: Kilometres; To: Metres.

3Result and why it matters

ToolLott returns “1 km = 1,000 m”. That gives Sam a concrete figure to check against the real task before they copy it into the next document or decision.

Fictional scenario using realistic example data. For Ready tools, the worked result is tied to the tested example shown in the tool. Replace the figures with your own inputs and independently verify important professional, financial, legal, health or safety decisions.

What this converter is for

Use it to convert common metric, imperial and nautical length units.

It sits within ToolLott’s Unit Conversion collection, where you can also convert measurement units for length, area, volume, mass, pressure, flow, power, electrical values and more.
