Age Calculator

Calculate exact calendar age from a date of birth, using today automatically when no as-of date is supplied.

Use the Age Calculator

Calculate exact age from a date of birth. Leave the calculation date blank to use today automatically.

Leave blank to calculate age as of today.

Calculations and text processing happen locally in your browser. ToolLott does not send these inputs to a server for this tool.

How to use it

Enter the date of birth. Optionally choose a different calculation date; if left blank, ToolLott uses today. The result includes years, months, days and total days.

Methodology & calculation transparency

How the Age Calculator works

The Age Calculator measures elapsed calendar age from a date of birth to a chosen as-of date; when the as-of date is left blank, the browser’s current local date is used automatically.

How ToolLott got this answer

Calculation breakdown

ToolLott will explain the current inputs and displayed result here.

How calendar age is calculated

ToolLott does not divide the total day count by 365. It advances from the birth date by complete calendar years, then complete calendar months, and finally counts the remaining whole days so month length and leap years are handled as calendar dates.

Calendar age decomposition
Age = complete years + complete months + remaining days

Years and months are advanced as calendar periods; the leftover interval is counted in whole days.

Step-by-step method

  1. Validate both calendar dates and reject an as-of date earlier than the birth date.
  2. Advance the birth date by the largest number of complete years that does not pass the as-of date.
  3. Advance by complete months from the anniversary date.
  4. Count the remaining whole days and also report the total elapsed days and next birthday.

Worked example

Owen, a operations coordinator, is completing an eligibility form that asks for age on 1 January 2026, and the birth date on the record is 1 January 2000.

Example inputs

  • dob = 2000-01-01
  • asof = 2026-01-01

Calculation / processing

  1. 2000-01-01 to 2026-01-01 contains 26 complete calendar years.
  2. No additional complete month or day remains on the anniversary date.
  3. Calendar age = 26 years, 0 months, 0 days.
26 years, 0 months, 0 days.

The result is calendar age on the selected date. It can differ from a simple days-divided-by-365 estimate because real calendar years include leap years and months have different lengths.

Assumptions

  • Dates are interpreted as Gregorian calendar dates.
  • If the as-of date is blank, ToolLott uses the current local date reported by the user’s browser/device.

Limitations

  • This tool does not calculate legal age rules that depend on jurisdiction-specific definitions or times of day.
  • Invalid calendar dates and an as-of date before the birth date are rejected.
  • The optional as-of date defaults to the current local date on the user’s device when left blank.

Common questions

Why not divide the number of days by 365?

That would only be an approximation. Calendar age is normally expressed in completed years, months and days, which vary in length.

Does the calculator handle leap years?

Yes. It advances real calendar dates, so leap-day years are reflected in the elapsed interval.

Can I calculate age on a past or future date?

Yes, provided the selected as-of date is not before the date of birth.

This page uses basic mathematical or ToolLott implementation logic that does not require an external factual source. The worked result is still tied to the production tool and QA example.

A realistic way Owen could use this tool

Owen is a operations coordinator.

1Real-world situation

Owen is completing an eligibility form that asks for age on 1 January 2026, and the birth date on the record is 1 January 2000.

2Example data / workflow

They use the worked values shown in the tool: Date of birth: 2000-01-01; Calculate age on: 2026-01-01.

3Result and why it matters

ToolLott returns “26 years, 0 months, 0 days”. That gives Owen a concrete figure to check against the real task before they copy it into the next document or decision.

Fictional scenario using realistic example data. For Ready tools, the worked result is tied to the tested example shown in the tool. Replace the figures with your own inputs and independently verify important professional, financial, legal, health or safety decisions.

What this calculator is for

Use it to calculate exact age from a date of birth, using today automatically when no other calculation date is entered.

It sits within ToolLott’s Date & Time collection, where you can also calculate age, date differences and durations, or convert meeting times between worldwide cities and time zones.
